Benefit for Carl Melgaard
Question from Neola Kofoid Garbe: Bottineau & Minot, ND
Gary,
Where can donations for this benefit be sent? I’m not much into attending benefits, but I’d like to donate to it.
Thanks.
Neola
Vonda,
Where can folks send donations for your Dad/
Thanks,
Gary

Allen Richard’s wife, Susan Putman, recieives prestigious United Way Award.
Posting form Allen Richard (’65): Midland, MI.
The Charles J. Strosacker Award is given to a United Way partner agency employee who represents the spirit of the community and shows leadership, compassion for those less fortunate and an innovative spirit. The recipient was Susan Putnum, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Great Lakes Bay Region.
Putnam said awards like this are rarely about the person receiving them, but instead are reflective of the support team of staff, board members and volunteers. Putnam oversaw her organization’s expansion with a merger with Isabella County’s program, the purchase of a building and another merger with Bay and Saginaw counties. She said the mission has always been about serving children.
“To be recognized for doing what I love, perhaps what I was meant to do all along, is an affirmation for me that I am right where I belong,” Putnam said.

I concur with Mona and Evie, number 8 is Cora Boucher Mongeon. Roland and Cora lived at the hill farm after their marriage till about 1945 when they moved to Dunseith for a short time. Dale and Alma managed the hill farm for about 6 months 1940/41 when Cora and Roland were in CA. Dale was caretaker at the Pe ace Gardens/CCC camp 1939/1940. Despite the social life at surrounding farms [Zylers, Seims, Metcalfes, Gunvilles, etc], Dale felt cut off camping out and was thankful to help at Roland’s until Cora becamed resigned to leaving her job in CA for home. Home was Dunseith for them about 1944/45 before Roland took over the “old” Gottbreht farm on Hyw 3. Some may remember the picture of Roland and Yvette Tennancour, Alma Gottbreht, Herman Boucher, and toddler EJ at the Roland Mongeon hill farm. Herman left for boot camp May 8, 1941. I was born May 9, 1941.
Thanks Gary. Lovely seeing Aunt Cora again. Sharron

Nettie, Viola Homemakers’ picture.
Thanks to everyone who provided information for the identification of the ladies in this picture.
It’s too bad there is no date on the picture. “Nettie – Viola” and “Home Makers” is written on the back of the picture. I think Aunt Viola wrote this. Neola
Homemakers picture, revised list: May 2, 2013
1. Thelma Slyter Kofoid (married to Robert Kofoid) Kofoid, Robert & Thelma Slyter 81

4. Child: boy?
5.
6. Lydia Larson Larshus (Larshus, Oscar & Lydia Larson 82)
7. Ruth Larshus Johnson Peterson? Ruth was Oscar/Lydia Larson Larshus’ daughter.
8. Cora Boucher Mongeon Dunseith Book, Roland (says Nora in index) p.169. Cora was Mona Dionne Johnson’s and Evie Gottbreht Pilkington’s aunt.
9. Nettie Larson Larshus (Larshus, Henry & Nettie Larson 81)
10. Child:

Viola’s parents (Larson, Laurits & Berget Vikan 82) owned Cordelia Store/managed Cordelia Post Office.Laurits died in 1911. Walter and Viola had no children, so I don’t know whose daughter she is holding–perhaps one of Nettie Larshus’ children?
12. Gladys Olson Iverson (Iverson, Ingvold & Gladys Olson 79). Gladys was Dick’s grandfather Henry Olson’s oldest sister.
I’m including Art Rude’s posting on fb (copied/pasted from Gary’s newsletter) I didn’t know your Grandmother Hannah when she was young, Art (think I met her a time or two in later years), but in the picture of your grandmother/dad/uncle (Gary’s blog), I can see the resemblance between her and Rena Larshus Roland.

Art wrote: “I think I will explain that one for the “non-relatives” Norma. My Dad is a first cousin to all the Larshus relatives of his generation, as Grandma Hannah was the oldest of the Larshus siblings. Rena Roland’s maiden name was Rena Larshus, daughter of Henry Larshus and Dad’s first cousin, and they were born a day apart.
