RHUBARB Story
Posted by Larry Hackman (’66):  Bismarck, ND

Gary, the rhubarb is again exceptional this year.
It must be due to the cool wet spring that we have enjoyed here in the Dakotas this year.
Have you had any rhubarb pie yet this year?
Did Marco POLO EVER GET ANY RHUBARB OVER TO THE Philippines?  I know they say he is responsible for getting it over to Europe and the Europeans are given the credit for getting it to the Americas.
I have had two rhubarb pies already, and a new recipe called rhubarb dump cake.  They all have been exceptional.  Thanks to my wife, who hates baking them because they always seem to run over in the oven during the baking process, and smokes up the house, but does it for her man.Â
Rhubarb A perennial plant having large leaves, whose long, thick, sour stalks are cooked into a sauce, or baked into pies or cakes. I have acquired a taste for sour foods over the years, like lemons and rhubarb.  I especially like rhubarb.  I don’t like too many additives made to the rhubarb in the cooking process as I the more sour it is, the better it is.
Now, there are certain benefits to eating and enjoying rhubarb that most people seem to be unaware of.  If they knew for instance that it causes hair to grow, and thicken, I know more people would eat it and enjoy it.  Now you are wondering how I know this.  You know that Marco Polo obtained the plants from the Chinese, but that isn’t the whole story.Â
The other part of the story is that the Chinese had originally obtained the rhubarb plants from the Mongolians.  Rhubarb grows to abundance in Mongolia.  The people eat it and they feed it to their Yaks.  Yaks are allowed to graze on it to their stomachs content. Have you ever seen how much hair is growing on a Yak?
For them people with thinning or complete hair loss this just a suggestion.
Larry,
I have never seen any RHUBARB here in the Philippines. I guess Marco Polo never got it to the Philippines. What he did get here in Cebu though is a might fine 5 star Marco Polo Hotel with one of the finest Buffets anywhere in the world.

Larry, did you know that we have the 11th largest mall in the world located right here in Cebu. It is the SM City Mall. Next year SM City will be opening up another mall twice it’s size located about 5 miles down the road from the current Mall. That mall will be the 3rd or 4th largest in the world with the latest state of the art technology too. Today we spent 8 hours at the SM City Mall. It was raining when we left too, but getting in our car located in our garage next door to our house and with covered parking at the SM City mall, we were never physically out in the rain getting from our house to the mall.

Gary, Please consider the attached to be included in YOUR blog(s).  This is regarding the little girl that I held when she was 1 1/1 years old.  Her father is a PhD peer doing similar work as my daughter-in-law.  The mother is also a scientist. They are at Eric, Kim and Sams’ this week end, 6 month since the shooting (14th).  The hope is to spend an extended weekend together doing fun things.
As noted by all tragic information, the Richmans’ (Jen and Jeremy) live in Conn., Eric and family live north of Boston. Eric and Kim met Jeremy at a common dojo when they were teaching martial arts in California.   LEE   s
