San Haven reply:
From Bernice Belgarde (72): Bemidji, MN
Gary,
A lot of our parents met at the San and married. My mom Mable Oneside and dad Isaac P. Belgarde met there as TB patients and got married. This was probably in the early 1950s. Where can I get pictures of my parents during this time at the San? Plus it would be nice to identify other Native American patients from the San. There is so much history attached to San Haven with families, the workers and what the San meant to many people from healthcare to job security.

Gary,
I’m going to try to attach some photos. We lost our internet connection (Comcast cable) for several days, so just now got done reading the last half dozen or so of your numbered Alumni messages. This first attachment is a photo of a group of men that include my Grandfather, Olaf Pladson. I got a copy of the photo from my sister Florence and neither of us could figure out what it had to do with. My best guess is that it would have been taken in the late 60s. You will note that all but one of those in the photo are wearing some kind of ribbon.. Also one of them is holding a violin (or fiddle if you want) so it may have to do with some kind of fiddle playing group (as Grandpa used to play one). Anyway, would sure like some help on identifying all in the photo and what group or occasion it was. The next two attachments are photos that I copied from photos my Aunt Lillian has. They are not the best quality as I had no way of copying them onto photo finishes, so just copied them onto regular paper and then scanned them into my pc when Alice and I got back home. Anyway, the first of these photos is of my Grandparents on Mom’s side of the family [Ulysses and Alice (Stokes) Thompson] and your adoptive Grandparents (Frank and Julia Stokes). Your Grandfather, Frank, and my Grandmother, Alice, were siblings as you know. The last attachment is two different photos of your Grandparents. The first I believe, was taken at the same time as the one with both my Grandparents and yours in it (see the second attachment) and the second photo was apparently taken at a much later date. Anyway, hope you enjoy the photos of your adoptive Grandparents. Please remember to either write or call my Aunt Lillian and thank her for providing them. I may also have some other photos I will scan in and send to you later. Thanks, Gary.
We need some help identifying the folks, with Olaf Pladson.
This picture was probably taken in the late 60’s.
