These pictures were taken yesterday as we were headed to the mall. Shikira will be 3 in a couple of weeks. She lives with her mother, Edelyn, in the house with the rusty roof to the left in the picture. That is her Grandma Berlinda (Bernadette’s Sister) & Grandpa Eddie’s house. Shikira is in and out of our house many times each day. She is always well behaved and doesn’t get into anything. Of coarse she gets lots of treats from “Aunt Adeth” as Bernadette is know here.
 
To assist Bernadette, Novie goes with us 95% of the time wherever we go. After we had Lunch in the mall, Bernadette, along with Novie, shopped for a couple of hours while I walked the mall. They got their nails done too. Bernadette often times treats Novie to a Manicure too, when she gets her nails done.  When they are ready to go home, they call me.
 
It is hard to believe, but we have the 11th largest mall in the world right here in Cebu. That is where we most often go. The same company that owns this mall is building another mall here too that will open next year that is twice the size of this one. That will be the 2nd or 3rd largest in the world.

Following the Farm rescue posting of my brother Darrel, some of you replied concerned about his cancer.
 
Bud was very fortunate to have discovered his prostrate cancer in the very early stages. With an elevated PSA, they did a biopsy of his prostrate and discovered cancer. With that discovery he decided to have his prostrate removed. With lab tests on his removed prostrate, they did not detect any cancer cells on the outer walls of his prostrate. With that discovery, they were very confident that all of the cancer was contained within the prostrate, so no post op cancer treatments were necessary. He was a luck guy in that respect. To prevent a hernia rupture of his incision, for several months or more he is restricted from lifting anything over 20 lbs. His post op PSA is Zero, so that too was good news.

 Mom looks great and is doing very well for 86 years old, she still works 2-3 days a week volunteering at the Good Sam.

Lloyd Awalt (’44) is not well

Dear Gary,
I just wanted to pass on that today I spoke with Diana Bullinger, daughter of Lloyd Awalt.  His condition is very,very serious. He has spent most of his time in the last couple of months at the Bottineau’s St. Andrews Hospital. The lasiks are not able to keep up with the fluid buildup.  Please keep Lloyd and Teresa and their family in your thoughts and prayers.
 
He has been such a spark around Bottineau and contributed quite often to the “blog”. For years he was always in the group who advanced and retired the colors at every event around here.  He also did alot of woodworking in his retirement.  One thing he made was very lovely wooden boxes for flags.

I just talked to Bud and he said this rig is 60′ in width and they travel 7 MPH  in the field. He said if it hadn’t been for rain they could have seeded his 500 acres in a day and half.

 The following is from Johnny Tweten, Lois Tweten’s brother.

There will be a memorial/burial service for Lois Tweten at the Rolette Cemetery at l:00 on Saturday (June 8?).  After the service at the cemetery, everyone is welcome to meet at the Assembly of God for general chit chat and snacks.

As I understand it, Johnny and his wife, Kay,  will be there.  I don’t know how many other members of Lois’ immediate family will be there.  I think Lois/Johnny have quite a few relatives in the Overly area.  Their mother was a Skjervem/Skjerven, Halgrim & Helga Hoiseth 523.

Much as I REALLY would like to attend Lois’ service/see Johnny, his wife, other relatives, I won’t be able to do so. :(

For those who asked about who was in the 4 generations picture, it is Ralph, Cindy(granddaughter) Mark our son, (Cindy’s father) Luella, Mark is holding Cindy’s son Lonnie age 1 year and daughter Elizabeth who is 5 years old. We were all in Bismarck for another of our great grandson’s baptism on Sunday so you may see more 4 generation pictures. On the 26th of May we went to Max for the baptism of another greatgrandson.

Cliff Johnson, Dick’s uncle, Passed away

Gary and Friends,

      I regret to have to inform the blog readers of the passing of my
dad’s brother, Cliff Johnson.  He was in the class of ’51 at DHS but
finished his high school in Towner , ND.  Many of the DHS alumni will
remember Cliff as he was an all around kind of guy with lots of friends
in the area.  He had just turned 80 in March while he was fighting
cancer that finally claimed his life. Cliff was married to Joy Nordquist
who was in the class of ’55 at DHS.  She actually graduated from Langdon
High School but returned to work at Security State Bank in Dunseith.
They were married in 1960.   I will enclose Joy’s address for those who
might want to send a card.  Thanks Gary.

Dalbec Family Memories

Hi Gary,
 
I was saddened to read Alice Hiatt Dalbec passed away.  Thanks to Gene for sending her obituary to you (I’ll also send an email to Gene.)
 
I’ve mentioned before the Harold Hiatt, Stanley Dalbec, John Kofoid families were neighbors in the north part of Bottineau in the 1940’s.  We lived in the house where Don Rude now lives.  Stanley/Alice lived “kitty corner” (SW) from us (Leonard Bergeron’s later lived in that house.  The house was either moved/torn down MANY years ago, and a double-wide trailer was moved onto the lot.  At one time, Oscar/Yvette Boucher Tennancour Brunsell (Brunsell, Oscar & Yvette Boucher Tennancour 536) lived there, as did Ray/Maida Korman from Kramer–can’t remember which couple lived there first.  The Houle family lived west of Dalbec’s (on the corner), Harold/Gladys lived south of Houle’s in the “barn-shaped house.  Wilma Kofoid’s (Fred Kofoid) mother, Mrs. Bosch, lived in this house many years later.  SO, Hiatt’s/Dalbec’s/Kofoid’s were friends and neighbors years ago.  Mom and Dad had been friends with Harold, Gladys, Alice, and Stanley since before any of them were married.  (Feel free to delete any “history” I’ve written, Gary–it gets a little long. LOL)
 
The preceding is a little history to send along with this picture of the Hiatt/Dalbec/Kofoid “kids”.  Myrna and Ginger were Harold/Gladys’ girls (both are deceased).  Ronald, Marvel, Keith are/were (Keith) Stanley/Alice’s children.  As you can see in the picture, I was quite “lady-like” already back then. LOL!  I’m so embarrassed about the way I’m sitting, “squeezing” poor Ronald so he almost can’t be seen. Uff da!  However, that’s the way it was. :)
 
If you notice errors in my “dissertation”, please tell me. :)

Gary – just wanted to tell you that the Twin Oaks did an excellent job for our 50th class reunion.   I don’t think your group will be disappointed.   You might add that the Twin Oaks Lodge is located on the old Pilgrim Park Campground Bible Camp or those that remember Bennie Wittmayer Store  when it was on the west side of the Lake Road.   Then Bennie moved his store to the east side of the highway – (probably was an old ball park area).   There is a store there now (Four Seasons Resort) ;  the Quilt Inn Suites motel and a cafe all on that side of the Lake Road.  Doreen

You had a hudraulic post driver mounted on the front of one of your tractors that would drive any unsharped wood post several feet into any solid ground.

 Alice Hiatt Dalbec of White City passed away May 27, 2013 at the age of 97.

She was born March 2, 1916 in Dunseith, North Dakota at home in the Turtle Mountains to parents Henry and Charlotte Hiatt.  She was the third of eight children.  She had two brothers and five sisters. 

Alice married Stanley Seymour Dalbec on December 10, 1938 in Bottineau, North Dakota, who preceded her in death on May 9, 1992.  They have a daughter and three sons.  Alice and Stanley moved to Medford in the summer of 1951 and have made the Rogue Valley their home ever since. She had lived with her daughter Marvel for the past nine years until her passing.

Alice was the matriarch of the family and kept five generations of family going strong.  Her favorite things to do were to crochet, bake and spend her time with family surrounded by her many grandchildren which she loved very much.  She made sure everyone of her fifty five grandchildren had a crocheted blanket to remember her by.  She was very happy playing cards and games with her family.  She taught her children and grandchildren the art of making lefsa for the holiday meal and this became a tradition that will be followed for many years to come. 

Alice is survived by her daughter Marvel of White City, Son Gene Sr of White City, son Ronald and wife Mary, Medford.  She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren and one more due in September. 

Alice joins her husband Stanley in the heavens with two brothers; Harold and Amos, five sisters; Marie, Gladys, Lilly, Betty and Beatrice, and one son; Keith.

A memorial service will be held at Memory Gardens on Arnold Lane in Medford, Oregon on June 7th, 2013 at 2:00 pm.

Our condolence are with you with the passing of your mother. Her passing marks the end of the Henry Hiatt family siblings.
 
To put things in perspective, I have pasted a picture below of your Grandfathers siblings. As I have commented before, in this picture Norman Hiatt was a strong resemblance to Amos. Norman was the only child of Willie (Will J.) and Margie Hiatt.

Date change and change of location for our Reunion.
 
 
Folks,
 
For our reunion we have changed the location from the Norway house to the Twin Oaks. The date has also been changed to Friday, July 12th. That is one day earlier than previously planned. See posting below.
 
Dick Johnson has made all the arrangements at the Twin Oaks. For our group he was successful in getting the cover charge for the facility lifted too.
 
With this arrangement, the Twin Oaks needs a good ball park number of those attending. The cut off date for getting your name on the list is June 23rd. The Twin Oaks has a capacity of 200 plus, so lets fill the place.

I think that is a wonderful idea. I have listed below the folks from the 1930’s classes. I am thinking that maybe some of their relatives may be able to assist with a little write up of their life history. Lillian Thompson Bergstrom, I believe, is the oldest living to have graduated from DHS. She was about my dad’s age and he would have been 98 if he was still living. She and dad were first cousins too.

FRANCIS LEE BELGARDE

Francis L. Belgarde, age 60 of Dunseith, died Sunday in a Belcourt hospital. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 1, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at the Pentecostal Church of God in Dunseith. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery of rural Dunseith. Visitation will be held on Thursday beginning at 4:00 P.M. in the Church.

Hi Gary,

Crystal Jean McKay is my brother Jay’s granddaughter. My brother Jay is the fourth oldest in my family. Jay graduated from Bottineau as did his son Damon, father to Crystal. Jay is a woodworker. He spends time in Texas with his daughter in the winter where he has set up a saw mill. He milled lumber from his daughter’s place and created a beautiful Hope chest for Crystal as a graduation gift. His wife Janice Hahn has passed away but she made many afghans. When Jay gave Crystal the Hope chest, he included one of the afghans that his wife had made.  Crystal has been an outstanding student. She has maintained a high grade point average while working two jobs. She works at the Spectrum and the Creamery.  We are all very proud of her.

This one is priceless…

A lesson to be learned from typing the wrong email address !

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter.
They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier.

Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules.

So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday,
with his wife flying down the following day.
The husband checked into the hotel.
There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an e mail to his wife.
However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address,
and without realizing his error, sent the e-mail.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston ,

a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral.
He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack.

The widow decided to check her e-mail expecting messages from relatives and friends.

After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted.

The widow’s son rushed into the room,
found his mother on the floor,
and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I’ve Arrived
Date: March 19, 2009


I know you’re surprised to hear from me.
They have computers here now and,
you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones.
I’ve just arrived and have been checked in.

I’ve seen that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow.

Dennis is a man of focus and execution.  He is to be highly commended.  I am certain he provides these scholarships as an incentive, a reward and a gracious contribution to the cost of more education.
Dennis and I grew up across the block from each other.  We enjoyed many hours together; including a 200 game ping pong tournament.  Dennis says I owe him $200 because I lost.  I have yet to see that obligatory written document. Also, my bank is delaying my loan application for that $200 due to our federal government’s sequestration.

I’ve been meaning to ask you to post this information in your newsletter, but don’t seem to get it done; here it is–FINALLY!
 
There will be an open house for Gary/Bernadette at the Bottineau Sr. Center on July 26 and a family get-together on July 27.  You/anyone who would like to attend are most welcome to attend both days.  We are hoping anyone/everyone (from the hills/prairie/etc.) who knows Gary/Bernadette will stop at the Sr. Center on July 26.  The building will be open all day; coffee and cookies will be served all day, too.  No program, just good “old-fashioned visiting”. :) Please pass the word.
 
Sunday, July 27, is basically a family get-together (potluck at noon), but anyone who would like to attend this event is very welcome.  I’m not sure, but I think many of the relatives will be at the Sr. Center BOTH days–I hope so! LOL

Wayne Miller and Clayton Parrill accept positions with the city

Wayne Miller and Clayton Parrill have accepted jobs in the city of Bottineau with Miller serving as its city forester and Parrill as the city’s building inspector and assessor.

CLAYTON PARRILL

Clayton Parrill was born and raised in Bottineau and for the past 15 years has owned and operated Dakota Memories photography studio.

Prior to opening his photography studio, Parrill owned and operated his own construction company for 25 years called Clayton Parrill Construction and Bottineau Woodworks.

Presently, Parrill is assisting his son who is starting a construction company in town and also continues to own and operate Dakota Memories in Bottineau.

The building inspector position will be 20 hours a week and Parrill will fill out permits, inspect sites, collect data on contractors and inform contractors on information they will need to know.

“My primary responsibility is to keep track of what is going on in the community and to make sure things are done right and according to ordinance. That way, when builders are done, they will have something that has value to it instead of problems,” Parrill said. “I am also going to be building a data base as far as contractors in town, that way I will get everybody’s name in a computer, along with their e-mail addresses, so when new ordinances, regulations or changes come, I can send them this information.”

As the assessor, Parrill, periodically, will be assessing and giving value of properties.

Parrill stated that he is excited to be Bottineau’s building inspector and assessor. “It is going to be a challenge, but it looks very interesting and it will be fun,” Parrill said.

City auditor, Penny Nostdahl, stated that contractors will see changes when Parrill comes on a job site and for them to be prepared.

“We are changing the permit process and we will need a little more information,” Nostdahl said. “Clayton will be asking contractors to see their license and stuff like that.”

Individuals, who would like to speak to the building inspector or city assessor, can call the city office at 228-3232.

Gary,
I just wanted to inform everyone of the most wonderful news I have gotten
in a long, long time.  Well, first of all, we finally got Pete’s liver
biopsy report and it’s not cancerous, some liver disease going on but not
cancer. He still has to start chemo on the 11th of June but we are so
relieved that it has not gone into his liver.

Second, I want to compliment Mr. Dennis DuBois for his generousity.
I received word this week from Mr. Brenden, our superintendent, that
Dennis has donated Scholarship monies to our school.  Two lucky students
will be receiving $1000.00 each this year, actually two lucky students
will be receiving each $1000.00 for the next 25 years!  They have to tell
me everything since I do the certificates for the school, lol.  And…for
those students that applied and didn’t receive any scholarship from the
school or other areas, he asked Mr. Brenden to give them each
$250.00…and if those that didn’t apply and decide to go to college, they
too will receive $250.00.  That also applies to any of our students that
go to the service.  How wonderful!!  I certainly hope that Dennis doesn’t
mind my posting this but I am so very thrilled by his generousity that I
just couldn’t keep this to myself. We at the Dunseith Public School thank
Dennis so, so much –

KXMC TV in Minot interviews an honor student from the area schools and features this person on their six o’clock and ten o’clock news.  Joe was Bottineau’s student.  He did a great job–loved that he said he liked ALL his teachers and didn’t have a favorite one–I think I’m right about this. Right, Vickie?
 
Dunseith’s honor student, Lucas Belgarde, also said he liked all his teachers–bless his heart. He also did a good job in his interview. :)

Hi Gary,

I just returned from North Dakota where I attended my granddaughter, Chelsea’s college graduation from the Wahpeton School of Science in Wahpeton, North Dakota. I called my granddaughter and read your email to her. It made her feel very happy about the path she has chosen. Chelsea has talked about going into the hygiene program since she was about an eighth grader. Here is an interesting part of her journey. Last year she introduced me to the head of the hygiene program at Wahpeton, Rhonda Edwardson. As we talked, I told Rhonda that I was from Dunseith. She said her mother-in-law was also from Dunseith, Carol Allard. I told her a story of my staying with Carol after a basketball game where we had both been cheerleaders. We came into Carol’s sleeping household around 1 o’clock in the morning. Carol asked me if I wanted a toasted cheese sandwich. Of course we were starved as usual and I quickly agreed. When Chelsea was accepted into the program, Carol’s granddaughter, Ashley was also accepted. So Carol’s daughter-in-law texted Chelsea to say now she and Ashley can share toasted cheese sandwiches in the middle of the night when they are having to stay up late to study just like their grandmothers!! The world is a small place.

Leo is having the second cataract removed today. He had the first one removed last month. We are looking forward to seeing you on the 28th of June for Bernadette’s birthday party.

How well I remember the Filipino Jeepneys.  When I was passing through Clark AFB so much in the 60s and 70s they were still using the old original jeeps.  These were modified to hold four to six people on the bench seats but they usually carried eight or ten.  I don’t know how they kept those old jeeps running so long but they got the job done (with only a fair to middling amount of discomfort).  Like the one you pictured, they all looked great!

The picture I posted was one of the more fancy jeepney’s. I often times cuss all the jeepney’s and the traffic problems they cause with their disregard to common sense traffic rules. They make many stops along the roads loading and unloading passengers. For that reason I try to avoid driving in the right lane. They are notorious for cutting right in front of you and then stopping, even in the left hand lanes. When they get my dander up I tell myself how lucky we are that all the folks riding those Jeepney don’t have cars. If they did, there wouldn’t be enough road space including driveway space to place all the vehicles.

Nice looking family.  Ah, to be young again.
 
The Jeepney pictured looks a lot fancier than the ones I rode in through the villages around Clark Air Base and Subic.  Back in the day, as I recall, these vehicles were/are manufactured in back yard garages with the most basic of tools.  All one needs is to provide the frame, running gear and engine and they will build you a costume made vehicle shaped to your design.

 Betty Belcourt (Alfred’s wife) mothers name is Dotty Colborn Johnson Forby.  Dotty, my mother Myrtle Colborn Hoopman (Sissy) and Percy Colborn are siblings.  Unfortunately, they have all passed away.  Betty and Alfred would visit our place and what an absolutely wonderful couple and such a beautiful family.  I will miss him.

 Philippine Jeepney.
 
Jeepney’s are the primary mode of transportation for the locals in the Philippines.
 
Following WWII, the United States left thousands of Jeeps in the Philippines. The Filipino’s started using them as taxi’s, so that is how the name came about. Folks would jump in from behind and sit on the bench seats to go to from point “A” to point “B” along the jeepney routes. Those old Willis jeepneys have all been replaced with ones similar to the one pictured below. I’d say they make up about 1/4 of all the vehicles on the roads in the Philippines today. They are very controlled by the government too with franchises and specific routes they can ply. The fares they charge are also regulated.

For the record I did not get a blog posted yesterday.
 
Tomorrow evening we will be having this Months Cebu Expat (Foreign) dinner at the Marriott, so I won’t be getting a blog posted tomorrow either.
 
The attendance at our monthly Expat (Foreign) dinners has grown considerably. We have nearly 80 folks signed up to attend our dinner tomorrow. The Marriott has a capacity in their dining room for 88, so we will pretty much fill up the place with just our group. We are into our 4th year having these monthly dinners. With a group this size, the restaurants give us up to 50% off the price of their buffet dinners. I run a hard bargain with them playing one to the other for the best possible prices for our group. It’s good advertising for them and they don’t loose money.

Two things:  First, I am so sorry to hear about Joni Blassingame.  She was one of my students, a distant cousin and most importantly a very sweet person.  I was chatting with Alan Poitra last night and he told me.  I’m still shocked —-  My prayers go out.  You know you are getting old when you live longer than your students.  It should not be that way.
 
Second, I won’t be at the reunion.  Susan and I will be just returning from a long overdue vacation.  Best wishes to all you ‘mates.

Sending another SHOUT OUT to the DUNSEITH HIGH SCHOOL Class of 1963
 
If you recall, in October of 2012 I sent a request to Gary Stokes to include an item in his daily blog regarding a 50th year class reunion for the graduating class of 1963.  This will be celebrated the weekend of August 9, 10 and 11, 2013 during the annual Dunseith Days celebration.  It’s still on……….Please make your plans to attend!  We’d love to see you and get caught-up on what everyone has been doing for the past 50 years.  And, of course, tell a few stories and share many a laugh.
 
Dunseith Days events include, but not limited to, the Little Shell powwow, free Saturday morning pancake breakfast, street vendors and, of course, the parade.
 
The reunion planners need your help in making this event a success.  If you are reading this and were a member of the class of 1963, please send a current email address to myself, Sharon Peterson Harmsen @ harm0825@bis.midco.net so that I might forward a reunion itinerary.  Watch for updates at your personal email site.  I have many email addresses but am unsure if they are current so help me out.  Those without email will be sent a copy via “snail mail”.

Gary,

Here is a picture of my wonderful brother in law, Jack.  The suspect is in custody and has $1,000,000 bond so he isn’t going anywhere.  They expect more arrests and the investigation is ongoing.  The funeral will be Monday at 11am in Williston, ND at First Lutheran Church.  Everson Funeral home is in charge.  We will bury Jack next to his mother in Makoti later in the day.  We are very appreciative of all the love and support shown by everyone.  This tragedy makes no sense as Jack was a funny, kind, loving human being.  I have attached a couple of picture of him.  Keep us in your prayers everyone.

Personal message from Diane to Me (Gary)

We are on an emotional roller coaster. Based on the evidence we saw the day of his disappearance, we were pretty certain he had been killed. They do have someone in custody so I am hopeful we get answers. We are happy they found him, because without the tip due to the $30,000 we posted, we would have never found him. But we are so sad that he was killed senselessly. Jack was an awesome human being…loved his horses and his ranch and he and Scott were business partners and very close. They have one other brother, Jason, who is Jack’s twin. On top of this we are getting ready for Scott’s youngest daughter’s wedding (Kendra lives with us) which is on May 25. She is so sad but trying to be happy for her wedding…so life is pretty much a mess right now. That is why it is so important to have everyone’s support and prayers, so we thank you. I don’t mind if you post this. Take care Gary.

Hello all, Just thought i would let everyone know that the Pancake & Sausage Breakfast benefit for Dad (Carl Melgaard) is this Sunday in Bottineau at the High School cafeteria from 7am to 1pm. (In case some of you dont know -he is currently undergoing chemo treatments).�
And a big thanks to all who have been so supportive. Dad & Mom really appreciate it!
 
 
Cemetery Story

Its that time of year, when everyone starts making their pilgrimages to the cemeteries,
to say a few prayers and to do a little work around their loved ones graves,
getting them ready for Memorial Day.
You had posted this story, I attached, on the blog back in 2008.
I thought I would send it again, Maybe it would help lighten things up after a long winter.

Cemetery Story
 
It’s that time of year again.  Time to make our annual trip up north to stop in at the cemeteries to say some prayers, and  and to put some flowers on the grave sites of relatives and  friends. 

Then just prior, to heading for home, to stop at Dale’s Cafe, and quench my craving for a jumbo burger.

 

 thinking about visiting the grave sites and with the recent stories on the news about sink holes appearing here and there

around the country, and these sink holes actually swallowing up cars, people and houses, I just couldn’t help recalling the story

about my brothers and me cleaning up and mowing the grass at the Duns eith Cemetery south of town.

 

My brothers and I while in our teens, had jobs taking care of the St. Louis and Riverside cemeteries,

back in the sixties, for Harry Douglas.  Harry ran the funeral home at that time, and supervised the care of the two cemeteries.

The cemetery supplied three push la wn mowers, of which usually only two would run and hand operated grass

clippers, plus a couple of spades and wheelbarrows. We supplied the labor. Mowing that hill was a real job.

Clipping around the grave stones was always slow and time consuming. The wheelbarrows and spades were

used to haul topsoil from a stockpile at the southwest corner of the cemetery, to fill in over the graves that had

settled.

 

We soon tired of the wheelbarrows. My oldest brother attached a hitch to his car bumper and went got a

two wheeled trailer we had on the farm. We then used it to haul topsoil to the grave sites. This method was a lot

faster and a whole lot less work. Wheelbarrows still had to be used to get into the tight areas between grave markers

but we didn’t have to push them as far. It would take us 3 to 4 days to do both cemeteries and we would have to get them  

done at least a week or more prior to each holiday. Them  hand clippers caused a lot blisters, and pushing lawn mowers

up anddown that hill took a lot of energy.

 

I remember an instance when one of my brothers was mowing along, when all of sudden he let out a yell.

A grave had caved in. He had gone down with it. He thought something had a hold of him?

He did not know whether to shit or go blind? Thank heaven he did neither.

After all, we all had to ride home together in the same car.  With the three of us brothers riding together

and being tired and hungry, there was usually enough tension. 

 

I remember Harry Douglas explaining to us that each grave usually settled three times. First when the wooden

Vault would give way, then when the casket gave way and then the body. The concrete vaults that are now

used, solved most of thi s problem. Aren’t we lucky?

 

My older brother use to also accompany Harry Douglas to Devils Lake whenever he had to pick up a new grave

stone. He had to do the heavy lifting for Harry. He said, He never did enjoy the trip, as Harry would drive all the

way there and back on the shoulder of the road and at a speed of 35 mph. He still remembers hitting and

crossing every road approach there and back.

 

Them sink holes are some terrible things??????

For this reunion reservations are not necessary. We have the whole room reserved for whoever shows up. Folks will be able to order meals from a select menu prepared for our group. Not knowing how many folks will be attending we could not do a buffet style dinner, so we decided to go with a menu of items that can be prepared when ordered. I will be getting a copy of the menu for posting too. Beverages and drinks will be readily available for purchase too.  There will be nothing formal with this reunion. We will have sticky name tags for everyone though that you can write your name on when arriving. We will also have a guest book for folks to sign.
 
Tom, what are the odds of Orvin being able to attend. Linda Gardner has offered to give him a ride to Bottineau from Fargo, but she will be in the area for only the first week of July. If Orvin is interested in attending, maybe we could find a ride for him with some of the folks from the Fargo area that may also be attending this reunion. Just a thought.  We could celeberate his 92nd birthday too which is July 14th.

Linda Fugere Wheeler Memories

Gary,

I’d like to say a few words about Linda Fugere Wheeler.  We were cousins who lived only 20 miles apart, but didn’t meet until we went to Minot State in our freshman year.  Both of us applied for a theatre scholarship and the story goes that they couldn’t decide between the two Fugere girls, so they split the scholarship and offered us each half.  I believe we met for the first time at the dinner where the scholarships were presented.  But we were fortunate to do a lot of theatre work together the next few years, and much of that time we were inseparable.  I will forever remember Linda’s irrepressible giggle and her love for red roses.

Linda had the ability to radiate happiness and light up a room, something we should all aspire to.  Her love for Bill, her “Prince Charming,” for theatre, and for all her family made her positively glow when she spoke of them.  She will always be missed.

I had a 34 minute visit with my Aunt Joy Peterson this afternoon.  She is 86; just raked her lawn and collected 27 
bags of grass for disposal.  She is waiting for the wind to diminish so she can go out and plant all of her flowers.  
Her initiative, ambition and ability surely says a lot about the special person she is.  I recall being at their farm 
when I was 12 years old.  I was 192 pounds and felt tough but I could not ‘hold a candle’ to the endurance and the
production of Joy’s efforts, every day.  It is so nice to have and to have had pleasant examples.  Lee s

I  walk away thinking, “Hmm, hard to believe this woman with so much  maternal energy
isn’t  still in her 30’s as she was  I first met her ……my very  first year of teaching.

The Los Angeles edition of the Wall Street Journal included a front-page article in today’s edition about Joyce Dumont, resident of Dunseith.   Authored by James R. Hagerty, the article is a Mother’s Day tribute to 77-year old Mrs. Dumont, who has raised 69 children:  6 of her own; 5 stepchildren; 11 adopted; several dozen foster children, and a few who moved in when they had no better place to go.  Mrs. Dumont is a Native American of the Chippewa tribe.

I have pasted a map of Guam below relative to the Philippines. It is not nearly as clear as the one I posted yesterday, but it gives you an idea where Guam is located. Guam, I think, is about 1000 miles east of Cebu. Manila is 380 miles north of Cebu
 
The map that I posted yesterday was sent to me by Bill Grimme on December 2, 2006. I too thought it was a good one, that is why I have hung onto it all these years. At the time I had just located all of the class of 65. The majority of us had email, so we kept the airways hot with many email messages each day. Folks would send messages to me and I would do an instant post to the rest of the folks. It was almost live and very exciting too. For me and for many of the others too, it had been 40 plus years since the majority of us had communicated. This lead to a very successful reunion in 2007 and of coarse the continuation of these daily blogs. 
 
I will never forget my first conversation with Esther Murray when I finely located her. She wasn’t easy to find either. She was convinced that I had the wrong number and person. Dunseith and especially the DHS class of 65  had not entered her mind for years and years and years. Having not thought of us for years, the names I mentioned didn’t register. Her mind just wasn’t channeled to Dunseith. After a few memory jars, she realized I had the right person. Then things clicked in her mind with great recall.  Esther became very involved with our communication and attended our reunion in 2007. As I recall it was her first time back to Dunseith since about 1970. Esther also made the 2010 reunion.

Linda Fugere Wheeler’s Obituary & Fugere family picture

Hi Everyone, 
When I had questions about pictures I have from Wondrasek’s, Linda supplied the information I was seeking.  Anything written in purple print is what I have added to Linda’s obituary.  I do this for myself–I had to check the net for the definition of “Carpe Diem”, as I wasn’t sure what this term meant, even though it states Linda seized every day of her life.
 
I didn’t know Linda in person, but I enjoyed her emails. I’ll miss her.
 
Linda was a member of the Bottineau High School Class of 1973.

Linda Rae L. Wheeler (née Fugere) 58, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 6, 2013 at the Collier Hospice, Wheat Ridge, Colorado, after a long struggle with cancer.

Born in Bottineau ND in 1955 to Leo and Doris (Bergeron) Fugere, Linda received a Bachelor’s Degree in theater and English from Minot State University. She worked for the United States Postal Service for twenty-five years, and was the Manager of Administration for the USPS Western Area when she retired in 2009. She was very active in the Denver theater community, and served as a judge for the Colorado Theater Guild’s Henry Awards. She was an avid traveler who visited all 50 states and many foreign countries.

Linda was passionate about life. Her motto was “Carpe Diem” (seize the day),and she seized every day of her life. She was an inspiration to her husband, to her extended family, and to all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Wheeler, her sisters Anna Dean Fugere and Myrna Adams, her brothers Dick, Jack and Mike Fugere, stepson Dan Wheeler, stepdaughter Kimberly Wheeler, and grandchildren Niko, Alexander, Kayla, Andrew, Grace, Alexa and Oliver.

Linda will be missed greatly by her many dear friends and relatives, including the Teddi & Joseph Montoya family, the Bob and Molly Gillespie family, as well as cousins Deborah Wittmeier and Peggy Nelson.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held for Linda at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Denver Metropolitan Susan G.Komen charity, or to a charity of your choice

Confirmation picture Salem Church, March 1966.  
David Larshus  Allan Rude   Pastor Joel Hernes   Marlys Roland   Leroy Rude
Pastor Hernes and Sonya arrived at the Metigoshe parish in June or July 1963.   I was responsible for printing the church bulletins for the Sunday services between the time of Pastor Grudt and the call and response of Pastor Hernes.  Sept 7, 1963 Pastor Hernes married Bob and me.  Yes – now fifty years ago.   Pastor Herness also baptized our daughter Alice in 1965 and Jody in 1966.     I believe Jody was the last baptism in the Nordland’s church building.   Pastor Mark Ronning arrived about this time frame.   Bob was  sent overseas to SEA (South East Asia) from June 1966 – Dec 1967.   He was stationed at Clark AFB, with the US Air Force Jungle Survival School – or PJSS as it was known. Last stop for rescue, survival, escape and evasion training for air crew before going to the War Zone.     I was able to live on Minot AFB in our mobile home at the base trailer park.   I usually went to the farm and to church in the Hills  on the weekends during that time.   I believe I have some reel to reel tapes from those early services of the Lake Metigoshe Christian Center.   I know on one there is some hearty laughter from Orvin Hagen.  Sure would be fun to find that  reel real “soon”.
Thank  you for keeping the Blog alive and well.   Your Reunion will be good come this summer.   You are correct.   Set the date, place, time – and they will come.  Enjoy one and all.   Bob and I will be in ND most of June but will leave about the 3rd to attend a 50th wedding anniversary of dear friends in Minden Nevada.  AND yes, on Sept 7th, 2013, Bob and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary at the Lake Metigoshe Christian Center with refreshments from 1 to 3 pm.   We were married on  Saturday, the 7th of September  in the Manger Church – I wanted the organ and to have the bells rung.     We will also have a celebration with refreshments here in Washington state at the Cusick American Legion on Sunday August 25th from 2-4 pm.   We started the year in January with celebrations – I turned 70 – and we will celebrate give thanks to God through the rest of the year and as long as he gives us breath.  Those of you who know us are welcome to come to either place – or both if you are the traveling rambling people like we are!!  Doreen Larson Moran  (Class ’61 BHS)

Folks,
As I am getting ready to send this, I see Novie, Bernadette’s Niece, checking up on her before she (Novie) retires for the night. It is 10:40 PM. Novie keeps pretty close tabs on her aunt.  We are so lucky to have her. Bernadette ask her for a snack of which she prepared. Novie lives with her husband and 4 children in one of the apartments we built for Bernadette’s nieces and nephews.
Bernadette is feeling a lot better than she was several days ago, however she feels very dizzy and her words are slurred.  We have made wheel chair arrangements for her on our flights back to the states. She can walk on her own, but often times feels like she is going to fall. She spent several hours shopping in the mall this afternoon with Novie at her side.

PS – Novie was an English major and has a BS in Teaching. A strong asset of Novie’s is that  whenever she talks she always has a smile with a very pleasant attitude. When Bernadette is down, Novie lifts her spirits. Novie is on our payroll, full time and oversees the other two helpers that we have.
