Neola’s Caramels
Request from Erling Landsverk (’44):  King, WS

Hi Gary:

We Had ice on the bird bath this A M.  I don’t suppose you folks have much frozen water anywhere in Cebu.  At least I surely didn’t  notice any when I was there in “45”.

Bet you don’t miss the frozen fingers and toes though. However, that is not why I have broken the long silence from Wisconsin.  We are going to visit our daughter Amy in Savanah, Ga. at Christmas and I thought it would be nice to bring her some of Neola’s  famous candy.  How do I get a list of those confections and get an order in before someone beats me to the punch.  So, my thought was to go to the top honcho and make a request from someone who has a good working relationship with the producer of this sought after delight.
Please elaborate at your convenience Gary, or should I say Old Neighbor.

Kindest Regards

Erling
Erling,

Yes, Neola does make good Caramels. I have forwarded this message with your contact info to her.

I do miss the cold, but when we experienced a little snow and some cold frosty mornings this past winter/spring in the Seattle area, the warm temperate climate of Cebu is nice. I didn’t have any gloves, so pushing a luggage rack with metal pipe bars that was all frosty from sitting outside was kind of cold on the hands.

Our monthly Expat Dinner in Cebu.

This is one of two tables of our group. There were 38 folks that turned up at this months dinner.
Following dinner, about 30 of us went to Slanders, a night club, so the gals and a few guys too,
could do some dancing.

Joke of the day
Posted by Wally Garbe, Neola’s husband

One night a nurse was making her rounds in a nursing home. While
walking down the hall, she came across an open door.

She looked in and saw old Frank sitting up in bed pretending to drive.

She then asked, ‘Frank, what are you doing?’ He replied, ‘I’m driving
to Toronto.’ The nurse smiled at him and carried on making her
rounds.

The next night as she walked past Franks room she saw the same
thing.
 ,

Again she asked, ‘Frank, what are you doing?’ He replied, ‘I’m
driving to Toronto, it’s a two day trip you know!’ The nurse
smiled  at him and carried on making her rounds.

Five minutes later she came across another open door and looked
in.
She saw Bill pretending to dance with someone. She then asked,
‘Bill,  what are you doing?’ Bill replied, ‘I’m dancing with Franks wife,
he’s gone to Toronto for a couple of days…’.

Happy Birthday Henry Hackman (’65): Mandan, ND

Birthday Greetings from Larry Hackman (’66):  Bismarck, ND

Gary
Henry turned 66 today.
You know he as always been a wannabe.
You know wanting to be a sexty sexter like the class of 66.
I don’t blame you guys though.  There were some that took extraordinary measures to graduate with class of 1966.
Like Lorna Abby who took off years from school
and then came back in 1966,  just so she could graduate with the class of 1966.
You know my class (class of 66) have been sexty sexters since we graduated in 1966.
Its too bad you guys had to to wait so long, you know, get gray, loose some hair,
just to become a sexty sexer.
Now that your class has finally made it,  hang onto it as long as you can
I think you should be able to hang onto it for at least a year, if you are lucky.
I don’t think it gets much better than this for you guys, that didn’t graduate  sexty sexers?
Oh Ya; this is about Henry?
Happy Birthday big brother.
Larry

Sometimes women have to be more specific I guess!!!

The wife left a note on the fridge:

·”It’s not working, I can’t take it anymore! Gone to stay at my Mother’s!”

I opened the fridge, the light came on and the beer was cold. I have no idea what in the hell she was talking about…………the fridge works fine.

WOMEN, who can understand them?

Joke for the day:
Posted by Trish Larson Clayburgh (’73):  Portola Valley, CA

Told at the bedside of a Stanford patient by one of our ER Docs to try to cheer her up. Spoken with an Irish brogue for best effect.

A devout Irishman was having a hard time trying to find a place to park near the pub.  He had circled the block again and again to no avail. He finally burst into prayer, yelling:  “Lord!  If you will help me find a place to park, I will gladly give up me tipple!”

Suddenly, a car pulled out, leaving a place to park right in front of the pub.

The drunk yelled out, “Oh never mind!  I just found one!”

Hi Gary, that was a great picture of Gary and Murl….she is such a beautiful person both inside and no doubt about outside! What a fun spirit she has, no hesitation when Gary ask if she wanted a ride! We did not ride the bike up, pulled it on a trailer behind the motor home. The weather was absolutely fabulous to make good use of the bike to look over the Bottineau, Lake Metigoshe, Turtle Mts. and Dunseith areas.
We also enjoyed visits with my cousin, Rod Ovitt, Norman and Shirley Vandal and Don and Sharon Nelson. It is always so much fun to touch base on home territory and reconnect. Another wonderful surprise this visit was NO MOSQUITOES. That was such a plus because we were outdoors much of the time. Sue

Hi Gary,

I’m being nosey. :) I see Susie Millang was a guest at the Seier cabin at Long Lake.  I’m wondering if it was at the John/Phyllis Seier cabin.  Their daughter, Emily, was my student years ago–maybe 15/20 years, or so.  At that time, Phyllis volunteered at our school (Bel Air); she “put in” MANY hours at Bel Air.

Laurel Hiatt Benefit on Sept. 20nd at the Midway bar on Highway #5
Message Neola Kofoid Garbe:  Bottineau & Minot, ND

Hi Gary,

I just had a great visit with Dawn Gregory Allard.  There is going to be a live auction (Rod Hiatt) at Laurel’s benefit. :)  I was happy to hear this; I will be donating a variety of caramels for the benefit–some made with regular sugar/some with Splenda.  The flavors will probably be plain, plain w/nuts, chocolate w/nuts, raspberry/chocolate and licorice.

Neola
Neola,

You make the best caramels. The problem is I can not eat just one, but  the whole package in one setting.

Seeing Dawn Gregory Allard’s name brings back lots of memories with her witnessing my folks at the Bottineau Bowl for many years. For a number of years my folks ate all of their suppers at the Bowl and on week-ends, their dinners too.  Dawn was one of dad’s favorite persons. She knew exactly what and how he wanted his food prepared too with one of them being burnt toast. Dawn’s dad, George Gregory was one of the best road grader operators too.  He operated the Rolette County grader for lots of years.

Fugere/Hill school buses

Reply from Paula Fassett (’71):   North Branch, MN

I, too, enjoyed seeing the photo of the Duane Fugere family.  Just recently there was a story on the local AM news of a school bus somewhere here in the Twin Cities that somehow got mis-routed and dropped some small children off at the wrong locations.  Kids were scared and parents were frantic.  I thought to myself, that would NEVER have happened with a Fugere/Hill school bus!!!

Joke of the day

This one is priceless. A lesson to be learned from typing the wrong
email address!!
A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a
particularly icywinter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their
honeymoon 20 years earlier.Because of hectic schedules, it was
difficult to coordinate their travel schedules.
So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday, with
his wife flyingdown the following day.
The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room,
so he decided tosend an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one
letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the e-mail.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston , a widow had just returned home from
her husband’sfuneral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a
heart attack.

The widow decided to check her e-mail expecting messages from
relatives and friends. Afterreading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son
rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I’ve Arrived
Date: July 19, 2010

I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now
and you areallowed to send emails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have
been checked in.
I’ve seen that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow.
Looking forwardto seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.
P. S. Sure is freaking hot down here!!!!

Gary, It was wonderful to see Duane Fugere and his clan in the 2012 picture. I enjoyed his companionship on the Dunseith Golf Course for about 25 years while I was reveling in living in the
North Dakota summers at Lake Metigoshe.  I’m sure the clan that the Fugeres made possible will continue to benefit our state and country because of the high standards of citizenship and community loyalty they exemplified.  I was in ND this year  a short time to visit and see the friends and relatives at the lake.  I sold my property  and will miss my marvelous summers in the “Hills of Home”.  So it is.  I hope Donna and the beautiful array of offspring remind my friend Duane how much I enjoyed the laughs, bad golf shots I made, and friendship he gave me all those remarkable years.   Thanks you, Gary, and Thank you, Duane. Trip to the Turtle Mountains

Reply from  Geri Metcalfe Munro (’59):  Fargo, ND

Hi Gary—We made a trip “up home” to the Turtle Mts over Labor Day weekend, Friday night was the wedding of Cheri and Jim Evans’ son, David and Kyleigh Monson, then the picnic at Cheri and Jim’s home with all of our Metcalfe siblimgs, the Evans’ and the Berube families.  What a wonderful time we had.  Then, on Sunday a picnic at my sis, Patti and Jack Woods, at the Metcalfe farm at the border—after touring Rabbit City Lake, where our grandparents had homesteaded, we stopped at Dale’s Cafe in Dunseith and enjoyed a “Jumbo Dale
Hamburger (we used to call it a Dales’s Special) in the olden days —in the late 50’s.  We used to go to Herman’s Snow White Bakery and get a Bismarck for 10 cents or 3/25 cents.  The Dale’s Special was as we had remembered it—we don’t like a lot of “stuff” piled way high, but this was terrific!!  It was fun to see the picture oof Jimmy Evans and daughter, Diane—hope they send out more pictures——–it was a beautiful wedding at the Christian Center…….

Message from Dale Pritchard (’63):  Leesville, LA

Gary,

I think I need to get with Mel Kuhn to find what is safe to do when a wife is gone.  From what I’ve read, I would probably be in more trouble.  Jackie left yesterday morning headed for Ashburn, VA (western DC area) to greet our first grandchild when “she” arrives sometime this month.  There is a “C” Section scheduled for Sep 19th but it’s looking like it may be earlier.  Jackie made 560 miles yesterday and 720 today for 1,280 total and got there tonight about 11:30 PM their time.  She was antsy about making that drive herself but she gets pretty determined when her mind is made up.  Our son, Wayne, and I will be driving the other car up next month to see the baby then we’ll be giving the first car to our daughter and son-in-law and coming back together.  We have a couple places and people we would like to see in NC while we’re in that area.  Pictures later!

Folks,

When Rose posted this picture, I instantly recognized Marlene Reing, the gal on the far right. Marlene is a sister to Debby (Darrel) Stokes. When I mentioned this to Rose, she replied and said that was indeed Marlene. Marlene and Oliver Reing live next door to Elma Severson. Marlene and Ollie were on our Caribbean cruise this past February too. Their daughter, Marlee Ray is married to Jim Fulsebakke. They too were on the cruise.

Elma Severson and Flora Carlson are from this part of the Philippines too. Rose has become pretty good friends with each of these gals too. I am sure that many of you know  Elma and Flora. Elma is a teacher at the college.  Flora works at Good Sam.

Shown below, is an actual letter that was sent to a bank by an 86 year old woman.

The Bank Manager thought it amusing enough to have it published in the New York Times.

Dear Sir:

I am writing to thank you for bouncing my check with which I endeavored to pay my plumber last month.

By my calculations, three nanoseconds must have elapsed between his presenting the check and the arrival in my account of the funds needed to honor it..

I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly deposit of my entire pension, an arrangement which, I admit, has been in place for only eight years.

You are to be commended for seizing that brief window of opportunity, and also for debiting my account $30 by way of penalty for the inconvenience caused to your bank.

My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incident has caused me to rethink my errant financial ways. I noticed that whereas I personally answer your telephone calls and letters, — when I try to contact you, I am confronted by the impersonal, overcharging, pre-recorded, faceless entity which your bank has become.

From now on, I, like you, choose only to deal with a flesh-and-blood person.

My mortgage and loan repayments will therefore and hereafter no longer be automatic, but will arrive at your bank, by check, addressed personally and confidentially to an employee at your bank whom you must nominate.

Be aware that it is an OFFENSE under the Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope.

Please find attached an Application Contact which I require your chosen employee to complete.

I am sorry it runs to eight pages, but in order that I know as much about him or her as your bank knows about me, there is no alternative.

Please note that all copies of his or her medical history must be countersigned by a Notary Public, and the mandatory details of his/her financial situation (income, debts, assets and liabilities) must be accompanied by documented proof.

In due course, at MY convenience, I will issue your employee with a PIN number which he/she must quote in dealings with me.

I regret that it cannot be shorter than 28 digits but, again, I have modeled it on the number of button presses required of me to access my account balance on your phone bank service.

As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Let me level the playing field even further.

When you call me, press buttons as follows:

IMMEDIATELY AFTER DIALING, PRESS THE STAR (*) BUTTON FOR ENGLISH

#1. To make an appointment to see me

#2. To query a missing payment.

#3. To transfer the call to my living room in case I am there.

#4 To transfer the call to my bedroom in case I am sleeping.

#5. To transfer the call to my toilet in case I am attending to nature.

#6. To transfer the call to my mobile phone if I am not at home.

#7. To leave a message on my computer, a password to access my computer is required.

Password will be communicated to you at a later date to that Authorized Contact mentioned earlier.

#8. To return to the main menu and to listen to options 1 through 7.

#9. To make a general complaint or inquiry.

The contact will then be put on hold, pending the attention of my automated answering service.

#10. This is a second reminder to press* for English.

While this may, on occasion, involve a lengthy wait, uplifting music will play for the duration of the call.

Regrettably, but again following your example, I must also levy an establishment fee to cover the setting up of this new arrangement.

May I wish you a happy, if ever so slightly less prosperous New Year?

 Your Humble Client

And remember: Don’t make old People mad.

We don’t like being old in the first place, so it doesn’t take much to piss us off.

Gary,
Shirley was married to Ralph Lagerquist, son of George, my dad’s brother. David, Steve, Polly, & Patty are their children. Shirley was a Peterson before she & Ralph were married.
Thanks Evon,

So Shirley is a sister to  Jack, Bill, Duane, Vida Hiatt, and the rest of the Peterson siblings.

Edna Lagerquist Woodford was a sister to your dad and George too.

The Ralph and Shirley Peterson Lagerquist family has many relatives among so many of you readers out there.

Thanks again Evon for this explanation. I have included Polly’s Obituary below.

Hello Gary – really enjoy your blog, keep it coming!

I don’t know if you have heard, but Polly (Paulette) Lagerquist passed away on Sunday – she was Shirley Lagerquist’s daughter.

I don’t have much information, I was hoping you might have her brother David or sister Patti Syverson on your mailing list.

Dale,

Where do Shirley, Polly, David and Patti fit into the Lagerqist family?  I am sure they are part of the John Lagerquist and the Woodford families too.

Thanks,

Cote Fugere was killed in a motor cycle accident
Posting from Diane Fugere (’75):  Minot, ND

Gary:

Sadly, Terry and Suzie Fugere’s only son, Cote, passed away this past weekend in a motorcycle accident.

Diane

Cote Jonathan Fugere, 29, Bozeman, Mont., died Sept. 2, 2012, doing what he loved most, riding his Harley.

Cote was born July 25, 1983, in Bismarck, to Terry and Susan (Burgum) Fugere. Cote graduated from Century High School in 2002 and attended the State College of Science in Wahpeton. He worked as a welder in the summers for Bobcat Melroe and winters as a ski technician at Big Sky and Moonlight Basin, Bozeman, Mont. At the time of his death, Cote was working at his dream job as a partsman for Harley-Davidson, Belgrade, Mont.

Cote enjoyed playing hockey, skateboarding, wakeboarding, and snowboarding. He was an awesome cook and loved animals, especially his dog, Chip. Cote lived his faith every day and always treated others with kindness. His family and friends will remember him as a kind, loving, handsome young man who always had a great sense of humor.

He is survived by his parents and his sister, Tracy Fugere, all of Bismarck; his grandmothers, Esther Fugere, Willow City, and Elaine B. Stern, Bismarck; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Harry Hiatt’s log home.

Harry was a brother to Johnny and Will J. Hiatt. He was their youngest brother and never married. He died of a heart attack in about 1954. Following his death, Stanley and Alex Gilje and Carl Myhre from Rolette purchased his farm. Until this day they have used it as a recreational farm. Alex and Stanley have passed on, but the Myhre’s still own it. They have preserved Harry’s cabin, authentic to the way it was when Harry was living. In my growing up days, Harry’s cabin was the gathering point for a large group of deer hunters, normally 40 to 50 folks or so. Howard Hiatt was the sharp shooter of the group. He normally always got his deer on the first day. Then he’d help some of the others fill their tags.

In my growing up days, Alex, Stanley and Carl parked their Jeep in our yard. On their weekly visits to the farm, they’d park their car in our yard and take their jeep. They always had a bunch of candy and goodies that they’d give us kids too.

Florence Dahl, I see you in these pictures too. I’ll bet your Uncle Harry’s log cabin brings back many memories.

Leland, Coming from a Norwegian, this is a good one. Gary

An American, an Englishman and a Norwegian want to get into the
Olympics in London, but they haven’t got tickets.

The American picks up a manhole cover, tucks it under his arm and
walks to the gate. “Smith, USA,” he says, “Discus,” and in he walks.

The Englishman picks up a length of scaffolding and slings it over his
shoulder. “Waddington-Smythe, England,” he says, “Pole vault,” and in
he walks.

The Norwegian looks around, picks up a roll of barbed wire and tucks
it under his arm. “Ole, Norway,” he says, “Fencing”…………

Bob Stokes – September 2, 1915 – August 20, 2000

Folks,

Today is my dad’s 97th Birthday. He has been gone 12 years now and we miss him dearly. Each day I strive to gain the level of qualities of my dad, but that will always be an uphill battle. His impeccable social and people skills were superb. Material things beyond basic living were of little importance to him. His love for people were some of his greatest qualities.

Dad never missed a Bottineau Memorial day parade either. For years he carried “Old Glory” the American flag. He was a die hard WW II American Veteran. If the American flag wasn’t welcome, neither was he of which he was noted for protesting for, several times too, with success.

Dad’s Middle name

Robert Dusinius (Petterson) Stokes

Personal reply from Neola

Gary,

I remember it because people were wondering about the name/why it was your dad’s middle name/etc.  I thought maybe it was the Norwegian word for “twelve”.  I asked Mom about this; she said it means “dozen”, so your dad was the child who made a dozen for Carl and Bertha.

I finally took the time to check for the correct spelling.  It is Dusinius.

Neola
Yes, Dad was number 12 and made a dozen. His twin sister Margaret was number 11.  With the twins, dads mother had 5 children in 3 years (1912-1915) Olga 1912, Emil 1913, Elvina 1914 and Dad/Margaret 1915. It is understandable why she died 7 months after Dad/Margaret were born. Following her death, dad was sent live with the Stokes’, Margaret & Olga with family in Canada and Elvina with the Jelleberg family, neighbors.  They were maybe spread out in their childhood days, but were a very close family in their adult years.

Gary and Debbie,  Oscar and Alberta were on my folk’s unwritten list of really good people.  We visited them off and on also.  Arlan looks an awful lot like your Dad.  I hate to admit it, Debbie, but Arlan is the only one of you I remember as kids.  Mainly, I guess, because we have kept in contact since high school and I normally tried to visit with them at least once on every trip back to Bottineau.  I have known his wife, Darlene Thompson, since she and I were just little kids.  Then they moved, I think, to Landa and I lost contact until after I finished high school.  I’ll always remember that one time when I was in Germany (69 I believe), they came by from where Arlan was stationed, picked me up, and we spent the day together.  Those were good days!

Hello Gary,  Vickie took these to send to you.  It is Luella and Ralph
Bjornseth with his restored Farmall.  He bought this from the golf
course in deplorable condition and did all the restoration himself.
Luella put the decals on.  It runs like a “Farmall”! Luella says it’s a
work horse – not a “toy”.
Ralph and Luella,

What a wonderful job you guys have done with the restoration of this old Model “B”. My guess is that this is an early 50’s model, maybe even as early as the 40’s? This may be a work horse, but what a shame it would be to use it as one now. It is a show case, not a work horse.

Lorie Hiatt & Neola meet at Wal-Mart
Picture/message from Neola Kofoid Garbe:  Bottineau & Minot, ND

I actually made it to Wal-Mart the other night.  When I was ready to check out, the lady behind the counter resembled Marlys Hiatt so much, but I was quite sure it wasn’t Marlys.  When I got up to the counter, this lady said, “Hi, Neola.”  Now I was really stymied.  I asked if she was Marlys, but also said I didn’t think so.  She laughed and said she was Lauri/Lori (I think) Hiatt, Marlys’ younger sister.  Think she said she was the youngest in the family/really seemed to enjoy that fact. LOL!  We had a good visit while I was checking out.  She knew me, of course, because of your newsletter.  Think she said something about waiting to see what I’d write for/in your blog.
Lorie, I didn’t see much of you in 1978, but I am pretty sure this is you. In this photo you very much resemble your mother Irene too and this would have been your 16th birthday

I also remember well the day you were born on July 27, 1962. We, the Mountaineers 4-H club, were in Minot that day taking in 4-H days at the the fair. We hired Fugere/Hill to take us to minot in one of their buses. Johnny Hill was our driver. Your brother Jim calculated that we were in Rugby, on our way back home, when you were born. So we remember that historic day well. You know when I left the area in 1966, at the age of 4, you were just a youngster.

Gary, Thanks so much for posting Mom and Dad’s photo, they are always in my heart and thoughts and dearly missed every day.
Deb,  We often visited your house in my younger days. That is when you were really young. Age wise, I am between Arlan and Donnie.  I remember one year your folks moved west for the winter.  I think is was California or maybe Oregon?  As I remember it was in the late 50’s. The next spring you guys were back on the Farm again.  Gary

Thanks Gary and Debbie.

That is a great photo of your parents, Debbie.  It brought back memories of our visits to see you guys when we were growing up.  As you may know/remember your brother, Don, was a class mate of mine throughout high school.  You are several years younger than me so my memory of you is of a pretty young girl.  As I’m sure you also know we are second cousins – on my Dad’ side and your Mom’s side.  Anyway, thank you for sharing that photo of your parents.

The Lady In The Car Behind Me…

The light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.

The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cell phone and makeup.

As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up.

He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell.

After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.

He said, ”I’m very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the ‘What Would Jesus Do’ bumper sticker, the ‘Choose Life’ license plate holder, the ‘Follow Me to Sunday-School’ bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so naturally….I assumed you had stolen the car.”

Priceless.

Gary,

Thank you for the birthday greetings!! Now I am officially a senior citizen, ha! I am back at school to start a new year with 22 third grade students. I have set up my classroom and have attended numerous workshops on the changes coming down the pike for this school year.

I am going out to dinner this evening to celebrate my birthday. This is the third celebration!! When you get this old it takes many days to celebrate!

Phyllis,
You are only as old as you feel. With your level of enthusiasm and charisma, you will always be young in the eyes of others.

Hi Gary,

You are too funny.  That photo was taken yesterday in the Napa Valley.  My wonderful Filipino friends invited me on a birthday celebration.  We were stomping grapes in a barrel – I know yuck, right?  But we didn’t drink the juice. We got to taste a bunch of good wines instead.  Those filipinos party just like North Dakotans so I fit right in.

The girl in the barrel is one of  my coworkers at the Stanford ER.  Her name is Terry and she is looking for a good man to date, so if any of your readers are in the market let me know and I can hook you up.  She has never been married, has no kids, is a great dancer and sings along to the oldies with a hearty gusto.  She owns her own house and has a great job as a trauma nurse.

UI liked the joke at the end of your last blog.  Terry would probably like a hale and hardworking guy from North Dakota….especially if he liked to hunt and fish and drink good wine….

Any Takers?  Ha ha ha.

Trish,

I am inclined to think that you will be the one getting the phone calls after folks saw/see that picture. I do know how old your are and you sure don’t look it in that picture. That is why I was thinking it was taken 30 plus years ago.

Yes, These Filipino’s love to celebrate birthdays. For those that don’t have much, they will go out and catch a bunch of fish, light up a wood fire and cook their fish in a pan over the open fire. They will go out and fetch a few tree leaves for their vegetables and cook some rice too, all over the open fire. When the food is all cooked, they will place it on big banana leaves on a table. Then they all stand around the table eating with their hands. They always have a little coconut wine to go alone with their meal too of which they all drink from the same container. If one gets sick, they all get sick, but that seldom happens. They have some hearty immune systems. Of coarse they have a certain amount of coconut wine both before and after the meal.

80-year-old North Dakota Farmer goes to the Mayo clinic in Rochester for a check-up.

The doctor is amazed at what good shape the guy is in and asks, ‘How do you stay in such great physical condition?’

‘I’m from North Dakota and in my spare time I like to hunt and fish says the old guy, ‘and that’s why I’m in such good shape. I’m up well before daylight feeding cattle, mending fences, planting, baling hay, and when I’m not doing that,

I’m out hunting or fishing. In the evening, I have a beer and all is well.’

‘Well’ says the doctor, ‘I’m sure that helps, but there’s got to be more to it. How old was your father when he died?’
‘Who said my Father’s dead?’

The doctor is amazed.
‘You mean you’re 80 years old and your father’s still alive? How old is he?’

‘He’s 102 years old,’ says the old North Dakotan. ‘In fact he worked with and hunted with me this morning, and then we went to the topless bar for a while and had a little beer and that’s why he’s still alive. He’s a North Dakota Farmer and he’s a hunter and fisherman too.’

‘Well,’ the doctor says, ‘that’s great, but I’m sure there’s more to it than that. How about your father’s father? How old was he when he died?’

‘Who said my Grandpa’s dead?’

Stunned, the doctor asks, ‘you mean you’re 80 years old and your grandfather’s still alive?’

‘He’s 121 years old,’ says the man.

The doctor is getting frustrated at this point, ‘So, I guess he went hunting with you this morning too?’

‘No, Grandpa couldn’t go this morning because he’s getting married today.’

At this point the doctor is close to losing it. ‘Getting married!!…????
Why
would a 121 year-old guy want to get married?’

‘Who said he wanted to?’

Philippine Dried Mango
Reply from Sharon Zorn Gerdes (’62):  Windsor, CO

Gary, with regard to the mango from the Philippines- Cosco sells packages of ” Philippine brand dried young coconut ” , mango, apricots, etc that are the best I have ever eaten.  They are larger pieces of the fruit and very tender – if anyone sees it, you should buy some- I am sure not as good as fresh over there but excellent for here.. Sharon Gerdes
Yes, I know they export dried Mango from here in Cebu of which is sold at Costco and other places. They are packaged in bright yellow packages and have the word “Cebu” written on them for the ones that are exported from here. They are not hard dried. They are of about the same texture, but a little softer than red licorice candy.   Gary

Jake Gardner
Reply from Dick Johnson (’68):  Dunseith, ND

Gary and Friends,

I didn’t know Jake Gardner real well but was out to his farm
once with Duane Norman many years ago.  One time Jake stopped at Dale’s
Truck Stop for gas in his old green ’49 Chevy truck. It had an enclosed
box in which he was hauling his race horses to a race in Winnipeg.  I
asked him what he was hauling and he said,  “I’ll have you know there’s
$30,000. worth of horse flesh in that truck!”  I couldn’t resist the
chance and asked him what in the world are they paying for slaughter
horses nowadays?  That was not the right thing to say to Jake Gardner!
It didn’t take him long to straighten me out on that,  much to the
amusement of Brian Fauske who was the station attendant at the time.  We
both laughed about it after Jake left but it wasn’t funny to him to be
making smart remarks about his prized horses.  I didn’t forget it.
Thanks Gary!

Dick

Folks,

This is a very good and interesting 8 minute film of the signing of Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945

1945 – Japanese surrender –

This film is believed to have never been seen before, only shots of the surrender were known.
If you are a history buff you will enjoy this. General McArthur’s voice is a rarity in these old film clips
Japanese Surrender- Amazing Footage Sept 2, 1945.
This is a ‘must see’ for the WWII history buff or anyone interested in history.
Interesting to see the other signers to the document, from New Zealand/Australia to Europe/Russia.
This is an actual film made of the surrender ceremony of the Japanese to McArthur in Tokyo Bay in September 1945.
Actual voice of the General. Never been shown to the general public before.
We always saw the “stills” but never the film itself

Ackworth School pictures
Provided by Devonne Hagen Leonard (Art Hagen’s Daughter): Tucson, AZ
Folks,
I have also added an old original picture of Ackworth on it’s original location, the way many of you remember it. In about 1955 the windows were replaced with the ones in the recent photo. I do remember the bell tower, but I do not remember when it was removed. Ackworth was moved to it’s current location, a half mile west of it’s original location, in about 1981.
The interior (Walls & Ceiling) of Ackworth has remained the same. Only the outside has changed.  To my knowledge, those are the same black boards that were in the school when my dad attended Ackworth in the 1920’s.
The last school year that school was held in Ackworth was 1960/61. Dogny Haagenson was our teacher. I was the lone 8th grader. As I remember and please correct me if I am wrong. Art Hagen and Dale Lagerquist were 1st graders; Marlys Hiatt 2nd grade; Darrel Stokes, Ray Lagerquist and Karen Hagen 3rd graders; Susan Hagen 4th grade; Lyle Lagerquist 5th grade; Allen Stokes, Jim Hiatt, Rodney Lagerquist, Carol Berg and Carol Pritchard 6th graders and Gary Stokes 8th grade.
Thank you Devonne for sharing these pictures. They bring back many memories.

Jake Gardner Memories and Pictures

Hi Gary,
I am sorry to tell you that my beautiful equine friend, Om El Akheil died in my arms at UC Davis on Saturday last week of a massive GI bleed.  He was a wonderful companion and a great and trusted steed.  I am so lucky to have known him.  It’s been a hard week without him, but I am filled with gratitude to have shared his life.

I enjoyed the stories on the blog a few weeks ago about my Uncle Jake.  He is the main character responsible for feeding my horse crazed childhood with a hunger for beautiful horses that has lasted a lifetime. Many an afternoon was spent at the table in their modest kitchen on that farm west of Bottineau, with Agnes (his wife) serving up lefse and homemade chicken dumpling soup, while Jake recounted story after story about the races of the past.  Their house was tiny, but it was crammed with trophies won by horses like Nipper Boy and JDee’sJoy. My niece forwarded me a photo of Jake in the winner’s circle which I share with you.  I bet some of your readers know who the other folks in the photo might be…

Jake’s brother, Bill (Linda Gardner’s father) was the first to teach me how to take care of a horse.  And my mom always liked to tell the stories of their Cob horse named “Joker”.  They used to take a sleigh to neighbor parties and dances in the hills.  My mom had a horsehair “muff”, which was a cylinder of horsehair, stuffed with down, and lined in wool, that kept her hands warm as they trotted down the snow covered roads in winter.  Images of the past that are stuck in my brain, handed down from generations of friendly farmers who all loved their animals and families.

I am so grateful for the generous help they gave me as a young girl.  Horses are my life’s passion, and the lessons I learned on their farms are the basic grounding that I still train my horses from today.

I don’t think people live long enough to really know all there is to know about horses, but the important thing I learned from Jake and Bill was that gentleness, patience, and making an emotional connection goes a lot further than force or abuse.

People can learn a lot about themselves from horses.

Thanks Gary!

Philippine Mango

The Philippines is famous for their Mango fruit. They have mango flavored everything, from Ice Cream toppings to jams and drinks. Mango’s are also very good eaten raw right from the tree.  We have taken back packages of dried mango, with some of our trips back to the states, that we have given away at several of the reunions. My brother Bud got hooked on the dried Mango, so we packed a few extra along on our cruise that we gave to him this past February.

From Connie Fauske Monte (’62):  Fort Myers FL

Happy Birthday to my Dad. He is one of the most wonderful men anyone could know.  He is my hero and someone I have admired all my life for his honesty and fairness to everyone. I am so thankful that we have been able to have him in our lives all these years. He has been an example to all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He has his faults like everyone does, his biggest one, not knowing how to have fun or relax. He has worked to provide for his Mother and sisters since he was 15 years old, and then his own family. My hope is that we will have him for many more years and I will have the legacy that he has. I love you Dad.

Connie,
I bolded “his honesty and fairness to everyone” in your message above because It so very much describes the true character of your dad.

I am hoping that someone is making hard copies of all these Face Book and blog postings and mailing them to your dad.

Last year I told your dad that I will make a special effort to attend his Centennial birthday eight years from now. I still hold that promise.

I knew your birthday was in August, but forgot the day until I saw Donna’s posting. I will always remember that you were born in 1920 though, 5 years behind my dad in 1915. I am so hoping you had a wonderful birthday. You folks were such close friends of my folks too. Dad always said you were one of the best farmers in the hills.

Here’s a good one!

An Arab Sheik was admitted to Abbott-Northwestern Hospital for heart surgery, but prior to the surgery, the doctors needed to find a supply his rare blood type in case the need arose. However, it couldn’t be found locally, so the call went out to all the states.

Finally a New London, Minnesota, Norwegian was located who had the right blood type. The Norwegian, whose name was Ole, willingly donated his blood for the Arab.
After the surgery, the Arab sent Ole, as appreciation for giving his blood, a new BMW, a pile of diamonds and several million U.S. dollars.

And many days later, once again the Arab had to go through some corrective surgery. His doctor telephoned Ole who was more than happy to donate his blood again.

After the second surgery, the Arab sent Ole a thank-you card and five pounds of lutefisk. Ole was shocked that this time the Arab did not reciprocate with a new car, diamonds, and money.

He phoned the Arab and said, ‘I thought dat you vould be yenerous again, and dat you vould give me anudder BMdubleUU an diamonds and money. But you only gave me a tank-you card and some lutefisk!’

To this the Arab replied, ‘Ya, but now I haf Norvegian blood in my veins so I gotta tink tvice before I spend my money.’

GOLFER AT THE DENTIST   This one may bring a little mist to  your eyes… only a serious senior golfer would  understand…………..   A man and his wife walked into a dentist’s office.
The man said to the dentist, “Doc, I’m in one heck of a hurry  I have three buddies sitting out in my car waiting for us to go play golf, so forget about the anesthetic, I don’t have time for the gums to get numb. I just want you to pull the tooth, and be done with it!
Today is Wednesday and we have a 10:00 AM tee time at the best golf  course in town and it’s 9:15 already… I don’t have time to wait for the anesthetic to work!”
The dentist thought to himself, “My goodness, this is surely a very  brave man asking to have a tooth pulled without using anything to kill the pain.” So the dentist asks him, “Which tooth is it sir?”
The man turned to his wife and said, “Open your mouth, Honey, and show  him……..”
